Confocal

What If?

What if we could not only see and detect possible suspicious tissues, but we could also simultaneously validate patient disease states - right there, right then - based on in vivo histology? Can you imagine the decrease in the number of useless biopsies? Can you imagine the possible improvement of patient care?

These questions are getting possible answers today as PENTAX’s emerging technology of confocal endomicroscopy comes to fruition. Already, PENTAX’s confocal technology is pleasantly raising eyebrows at renowned facilities as they evaluate the possibilities (click here to read more).

Technology Breakthrough

PENTAX’s confocal breakthroughs fuse the world of endoscopy and confocal microscopy. To create confocal images, blue laser light is focused on the desired tissue via the distal end of an endoscope equipped with a special confocal optical unit. Applied fluorescent materials are excited by laser lights which the confocal optical unit detects in an exactly defined horizontal level. This produces high-resolution microscopic structures down to the size of the cell nucleus.

These details provide histological images of tissue, giving the possibility of defining the cellular signatures of disease states in real-time. As the data and evidence continues to grow for confocal technology, the possibilities are becoming reality.
