Professor Martin Birchall and Mr Gary Wood, from the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital (RNTNE), presented the Official Satellite Symposium – “The Laryngology Interventional Clinic, UK experience” - which was also sponsored by PENTAX Medical.

Professor Birchall said: “ENT started with laryngology in the 19th century when everything was done in out-patients. With the invention of anaesthesia, laryngology moved into the operating theatre.

“But now, the advanced technology has made us look again at the speed, convenience and reduced cost, and also the ability to carry out advanced procedures that weren’t previously possible, within an out-patient setting.

“Out-patient procedures clinics of this nature are advanced in the USA but have only recently been pioneered in the UK and here at RTNE we have a combined procedures clinic. Examples of procedures include vocal cord injections, biopsy of the throat, oesophagoscopy and even the use of lasers.

“It is inevitable that incremental changes in technology will make procedures even easier to perform in the future and the outpatient procedure clinic will become the mainstay of Laryngology practice in the UK and internationally”, he said.

PENTAX Medical experts were on hand to showcase their full range of innovative products which meet all Speech, Voice and Swallowing requirements, including Video Naso-Pharyngo-Laryngoscopes. Also on show were the PENTAX EE1580K Transnasal Oesophageal (TNO) Video Scope, as well as the PENTAX HD VNL 1590STi ENT Video Scope offering a complete solution for leading edge video endoscopy. Delegates were able to see the products for themselves at a TNO conference workshop on Transnasal Oesophagoscopy, and also gained hands-on experience of the latest ENT system – the EPK-i5000 video processor, in the clinical skills area.

Professor Birchall said: “Laryngology 2013 was an undoubted success and major milestone in showcasing the best in the world in terms of innovation, by those who are the best in the world. Partnership with the medical device industry is integral to the success of the meeting. Leading amongst endoscopic companies in terms of quality of technology, innovation and responsiveness to clinician and patient needs, is PENTAX Medical.”

For those who would like the opportunity to further their skills, a one day course is being held at the University Hospital, Coventry, on 3rd September 2013. The Transnasal Oesophagoscopy in Head and Neck Surgery course will include practical demonstrations. To find out more click here
