The latest technology boosting endoscope reprocessing to enhance patient safety and hospital efficiency

HAMBURG, January 31 2022 – PENTAX Medical Europe has launched a new ultra-fast endoscope drying and storage solution – the PlasmaTYPHOON™+. Designed to improve productivity and traceability, this premium model further advances endoscope reprocessing to enhance patient safety.

In line with their Hygiene Commitment, PENTAX Medical strives to innovate products that focus on ensuring patient safety. This was already a driving factor when developing the PlasmaTYPHOON™ and PlasmaBAG™ system, launched in 2019. Like the classic model, the new PlasmaTYPHOON+ enhances patient safety and boosts turnaround times. Additionally, the PlasmaTYPHOON+ and PlasmaBAG system facilitates seamless workflows – better supporting physicians, nurses, reprocessing staff, and hospital staff across a multitude of departments, while offering full traceability.

Enhanced hygiene and patient safety

The PlasmaTYPHOON+ dries endoscopes of all major brands even faster than before in just 1- 3 minutes, maintaining strong hygiene standards and enhanced safety for every patient. The system uses two types of airflow to ensure each individual channel is perfectly dried: a laminar flow to eliminate the residual fluid in the channel, and a turbulent heated flow to further and completely dry the channel walls.

Boosting the efficiency of drying cycles directly impacts endoscope availability and therefore patient procedures, explains Anne Hillion, Health executive for GI endoscopy & pulmonology Hôpital Européen Georges Pompidou, Paris, France: “Since we have had the PlasmaTYPHOON+ and PlasmaBAG system, we have not only improved our reprocessing efficiency but also the hospital efficiency. With the improved endoscope turnover, we are able to reduce waiting times between procedures and therefore schedule more patient procedures.“

In combination with complete drying, storage of the endoscope in the single-use carbon-neutral PlasmaBAG ensures the preservation of its disinfected state for up to 31 days1. To provide a safe and active storage environment, the PlasmaBAG is insufflated with Plasma containing ozone molecules, and then sealed. By maintaining the disinfected state this reduces the need to reprocess endoscopes after storage and also eliminates further risk of recontamination upon transport. As a result, the reprocessed endoscopes are available anywhere, anytime.

Maximising productivity in endoscope reprocessing

The newly designed touch panel display and automatic validation with integrated alarms guide users along every step of the procedure; offering a more intuitive user experience making processes safer and easier.

Visual guidance and colour-coding further improves the process flow. The optimised overall handling of the PlasmaTYPHOON+ and PlasmaBAG system significantly improves the productivity of the hospital department.

Compared to other drying and storage solutions, the PlasmaTYPHOON+ and PlasmaBAG system is not only smaller in footprint, but also offers unlimited storage capacity. Prof. Rocco Trisolini,Director Interventional Pulmonology Unit, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli (Rome, Italy), comments on the advantages of the new system: “The PlasmaTYPHOON+ is the perfect compact solution for us, contributing to an overall reduction in time, cost and space needed. Being able to store the endoscope in the PlasmaBAG for up to 31 days, the endoscope is ready to use for our patients at any time.”

Boosting hospital efficiency and traceability

The PlasmaTYPHOON+ and PlasmaBAG system also offers full traceability with both printed and digital audit-ready data-records. Connectivity to hospital networks and data management systemsenables drying and storage cycles to be linked to patient data – ensuring additional safety in daily processes.

Marion Peukert, Nursing Director Endoscopy Unit, Stauferklinikum, Schwaebisch-Gmuend, Germany, explains how using the PlasmaTYPHOON+ benefits her daily work: “Fast and efficient endoscope drying, contamination proof storage as well as documented evaluation are very important to us. PlasmaTYPHOON+ meets all these requirements. A high hygiene standard brings safety for our patients – and peace of mind for us!”

The PlasmaTYPHOON+ is available from January 31st, 2022. Launch dates may vary between global regions, please contact your local PENTAX Medical sales representative for further information.
